Newark ABC and Suggy’s Gym head coach Dean Sugden appointed as GB Boxing Coach

After what he describes as ‘an amazing year’ that began when he was assessed at the English Institute of Sport for his Level 3 Coaching qualification with England Boxing, Newark Amateur Boxing Club and Suggy’s Gym head coach Dean Sugden can now officially announce his appointment as a GB Boxing Coach.

For the last 12 months he has been on a world class programme for coaches at GB Boxing, alongside the England Boxing Pathway Performance Coaching role that he took on at the beginning of 2023, an action-packed period especially as he had the opportunity to go to two international competitions with the England Senior Team.

“Working with the very best amateur boxers and coaches in the world, I have also been developing my own knowledge around Performance Coaching in boxing and have able to access some of the best training and personal development I could have wished for,” said Dean.

“And after a great year of working with Podium and Academy boxers at GB in a development role, I have seen some of England’s senior boxers progress in a short period of time to GB Boxing.

“Now I can officially announce that I am a GB Boxing Coach – so what does this mean for Newark Amateur Boxing Club, Suggy’s Gym and the East Midlands Region where I am head coach?

“As a sessional coach for GB and EB, I will still be heavily involved both across the region and in my own club, where I am lucky enough to have a fantastic team of two Level 2 coaches as well as five Level 1 coaches and one more in the making supporting me.

“It’s been a tough year for me academically but a great and busy year of coaching and learning, with a Certificate in High Performance in Sport with GB as well as a Performance Coaching in Boxing with EB that will be completed in April.

“After attending a 10-day course I also successfully completed an IBA 1 Star coaching qualification, an international qualification that’s recognised world-wide and allows me to corner all over the world including the Olympics if I’m asked and required to do so by GB Boxing.

“I am super proud to represent my country England as a Coach. I am delighted and so proud to announce I am now officially a GB Development Coach. I am buzzing to be able to help the world class coaches and boxers at GB up in Sheffield potentially become Olympians and realise their lifetime dream.”
