Jade ‘Greo’ Grierson’s performance on Saturday night was BAD NEWS for Patricia ‘Bad News’ Gonzalez

With both boxers making weight easily on Friday 1 March, Suggy’s Gym’s Jade Grierson was on fire from start to finish on Saturday 2 March, when she went head-to-head with her Spanish opponent Patricia Gonzalez in what was by far the best bout of an evening brought to Nottingham’s Rushcliffe Arena by Scott Calow Boxing Promotions.

Round one saw  Jade boxing to instructions and the game plan, lighting the Spaniard up with straight punches and controlling the space and distance with the right tactics, something that was so important against such a big and strong opponent.

Although Patricia stopped an unbeaten opponent last time out, this time it was the Newark boxer who showed her class and technical superiority over the first three rounds. And even though she took her foot off the pedal a little in the fourth, allowing Patricia to build in momentarily, Jade landed a tremendous right hand on the bell at the end of the round that rocked her opponent.

In the fifth round, Jade got right back to her boxing and looked to apply pressure on Patricia, making it really uncomfortable for her as she started to add spite in all her shots, leaving Patricia struggling to cope with her intelligent pressure.

The final round saw both girls going head-to-head and slugging it out and, although Jade looked to be tiring, she always came out on top of all exchanges.

“I was very impressed with Jade’s performance on Saturday evening,” said Suggy’s Gym’s head coach Dean Sugden.

“I told her we had to be tuned in and deliver a punch perfect performance, given that Patricia is very strong and would keep on coming. Despite the fact that Patricia did just that, Jade was always one step ahead in the fight, dropping maybe the fourth round but catching the eyes of the boxing fraternity.

“After the fight, I was stopped by a few influential people at ringside, telling me how impressed they were with Jade and her performance against such a  strong opponent.  With her record now standing at 3-0, she has been moved up to third in the rankings, with only Terry Harper and Hannah Rankin above her, and we are one step closer to a title fight for her.

“In the meantime all eyes will be on another of  our pro boxers, Chad Sugden, who returns to the ring on Saturday 12 April at Sheffield’s Magna Centre, and full details of this one will be released shortly.”

“I couldn’t be happier than I was coming away from Saturday’s contest, that left me feeling as though I followed instructions from the corner by the book and delivered what we put into play in the gym,” said Jade.

“We knew Patricia was going to be strong and game and were prepared for exactly  that but this didn’t faze me as I am levels above and have shown that I can deal with opponents like these who are looking to take away your winning record.

“I enjoyed showing my flair and capabilities, biting down on my gum shield, showing I can also fight and proving that I am a REAL contender in the super welterweight division. Now currently  third in the British rankings I am very excited for the future – I will box anyone, anywhere, the sooner the better!

“The plan now is to stay focused and develop from Saturday’s performance, sitting down with the Suggy’s Gym team and discussing the next best steps for my career.

“It’s always a pleasure to box here in the Midlands and taking 100-plus fans there certainly gave  plenty of energy in the arena.  A huge thank you to all of my supporters on the night and to my sponsors Novati and Security2 who were also in attendance.

“And how fantastic to finish the night off sharing the ring with my daughter Amani, my legacy and the one I do all of this for.”
