A great experience for Suggy’s Gym pro boxer Jade Grierson

Suggy’s Gym pro boxer Jade ‘Greo’ Grierson was back in the ring on Saturday 6 September, at Sunderland Live Arena in Houghton-le-Spring, where her opponent was former World Champion Sandy Ryan.

With five wins on her record since her first professional fight in December 2022, Jade was looking to make her next fight another victory and the Suggy’s Gym team and her supporters were there to cheer her on at the Matchroom Boxing event in a 10 round World Title Eliminator against Sandy Ryan who had over twice as many fights.

“Sandy has had a total of eleven fights so far, seven of which she won. In her senior championship debut in 2015, she won a World Championship silver medal – representing England she won a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia – and in 2019 she was selected to compete at the World Championship in Ulan-Ude in Russia, where she lost by split decision. As a professional, despite becoming a world champion in 2023, Sandy believes her fight with Jessica McCaskill was her breakout in the sport.

“Sandy became WBO welterweight champion in April 2023 when she defeated Marie-Pier Houle by unanimous decision. The 31 year-old made her first title defence against McCaskill, who was the WBC and WBA champion, in Orlando, USA when all three world titles were on line – this epic battle ended in a draw. Sandy then went on to knock out Terri Harper in four rounds to successfully defend her WBO World Title. More recently, we have seen her box back to back against Mikaela Mayer in a Box Office Pay Per View event – the American comfortably outworked Ryan for a unanimous decision win to retain her WBO welterweight world title in her second meeting with the Brit at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas.”

It was a massive ask on paper but Jade proved it was worth rolling the dice as her stock has now gone up significantly.

“What a great experience for Jade – although she didn’t get the win we were all hoping for, the way she presented herself was first class, smashing it and making us all proud” said Dean. “She needs to take a bow for putting on such an incredible show and proving that, with a few minor changes, the landscape could easily change. We tried to do the impossible but that’s how we roll and now we can use this experience to build a stronger and better Greo.

“Thank you Sandy Ryan for the test and thank you Matchroom Boxing for the fantastic platform to introduce Jade Grierson to the world.”

“I gave it my all there on Saturday night and I hope I did Newark and everyone proud” said Jade. “I tested myself against a tough World Champion and went to the final bell – thank you for all the support and kind words, it really does mean a lot and what an experience it was. Do you think they’ll remember the name? Jade GREO of course!”
