Sam scoops gold in national championships

Newark Amateur Boxing Club’s Sam Hardy became his home town’s first ever Minors National Champion with a winning performance in the England Boxing National Schools and Minors Championships at the Grantham Meres Leisure Centre on Saturday 26 May.

Twelve-old Sam extended his undefeated record with a victory over Peterborough Police Boxing Club’s Alfie Baker in the event, which brings together the best young amateur boxers in the country from within the schools and minors age categories.

“Sam did exactly what we instructed him to do throughout the bout,” said Irvine Taylor, one of his coaches along with Dean Sugden and Steve Williams. “Looking relaxed and confident, he went out and controlled the fight from the centre of the ring, throwing fast combinations to all the target areas and making good use of his defensive skills too.

“Before the contest, Dean told Sam to make the most of the occasion and simply enjoy it, which he quite clearly did. It was a very impressive performance; he thoroughly deserved the gold medal which he was awarded as national champion and we’re all really excited about his future with the club.”

Sam will be back in action alongside other talented young local boxers on the second NABC Home Show at Farndon Memorial Hall on Saturday 23 June. For more details and ticket information, contact Irvine Taylor on 07415 313749.
