Nottinghamshire boxer Chad Sugden is getting set to end 2019 on a high as he prepares to head to Birmingham for his last contest of the year.
Coming off a decisive victory over the Dutch Number 1 Farouk Daku at the Harvey Hadden Stadium in October, the Suggy’s Gym Light Heavyweight will face Ben Thomas in a six round match up at the Holiday Inn on Saturday 21 December and says he is determined his army of supporters will be celebrating Christmas in style when he adds another win to his professional record on the BCB Promotions’ show.
The December bout will see the Nottingham-born boxer going up against an opponent who defeated the current Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Champion Lindon Arthur and also as an amateur went the distance with the current WBA World Light Heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol.
“With several offers on the table after the October bout, we originally accepted a fight for the English title against Shakan Peters,” said Suggy’s Gym head coach Dean Sugden. “But Shakan chose to challenge Craig Richards for the vacant British title instead, a decision we can’t fault him for given he will be fighting for the much sought after Lonsdale Belt and, in my opinion, it’s an easier option than defending his English title against Chad.
“After careful consideration of all the other offers, we’ve opted to work with BCB Promotions for the next one. Not only does it give us more time to prepare and be in the best possible shape but we also wanted to show our appreciation for Chad’s followers by giving them a Christmas night out with a difference.
“At 6’ 4” with 78 amateur fights on his record and, like Chad, just one loss as a professional, on paper Big Ben looks like another tough opponent for us. But for Suggy’s Gym and for Chad, that’s what it’s all about – keeping it real, making sure we test ourselves every time we walk out into the ring and giving the fans an exciting contest and a 50/50 fight, something that’s very rare in the world of pro boxing these days.”
“I started training expecting to go up against Shakan who’s 6’ 7”, so I’m more than ready to take on Ben and looking forward to sharing the squared circle with him,” said Chad.
“He will come and have a real go but that will just bring out the best in me and show exactly how much I’m developing as a boxer. I’m going to put a stop to his rise to the top and in doing so reinforce my position not only as the best prospect in the Light Heavyweight division but also as a UK-based boxer who can go on to dominate the world stage.”
Tickets for Saturday 21 December are on sale now at Suggy’s Gym in Newark or via the ticket hotline 07816 840920 / 01636 605708, priced £35 for standard seating and £65 for VIP table tickets with hot food. Transport from Newark will also be available on request.
