Newark Amateur Boxing Club’s magnificent seven put on a show for home fans

Newark Amateur Boxing Club’s HOME SHOW returned to Farndon on Saturday 14 September, with seven of its rising stars stepping into the ring to entertain the crowd at the Memorial Hall.

The award for Fighter of the Night went to 13-year old Lauren Workman, bronze medallist in the 2019 England Boxing National Schools Championships in May, who scored her first home victory with a unanimous decision win over Border City ABC’s Nell Conkey.

“What a great way for Lauren to start her second boxing season,” said Suggy’s Gym head coach Dean Sugden. “Since making her debut for us last year, her skills and confidence have grown considerably, her hard work in the gym is definitely paying off and we’re all looking forward to seeing where she goes from here.”

Saturday evening saw two of Lauren’s fellow club members follow in her footsteps to take unanimous wins, with silver medallist in the May Schools Championships Chloe Davis defeating Border City ABC’s Emma McCormick and Deivids Paulauskas beating Shay Groom of Empire ABC.

Two boxers made their debut for Newark ABC on the show, with 10-year old James Jordan making an impressive start in a skills bout with Scunthorpe BC’s Ryan Keeton and 16-year old Josh Jackson getting off to an equally good start with a split decision win over Brandon Gravante from 2nd City ABC.

There were split decisions in two other bouts, when Alfie Briggs-Price was narrowly pipped at the post by Harvey Harmon from Boston ABC and Mac O’Brian finished the evening for Newark ABC in fine style with his victory over Border City ABC’s Rogan Marshall.

“We all thought Alfie was unlucky not to get the decision but he showed massive improvements in his approach to the bout,” added Dean. “And although European bronze medallist Sam Hardy and Midlands Champion Mikey Lindsay were missing from the line-up on the night, the seven boxers on the card for us rose to the occasion and did themselves and the club proud.

“There’s no doubt that the depth and quality of training at Newark ABC is second to none. Having our two professionals, Chad and Regis, both coaching the younger boxers coming through and cornering for them as well is a definite asset to them all and there’s a real buzz in the air down at Suggy’s Gym these days.”

The HOME SHOW returns to Farndon on Saturday 16 November but in the meantime all eyes will be on the three Sugden brothers.

First up will be Bailey who heads back out to the USA next week to fight in the joint main event of GLORY 68 Miami on Saturday 28 September, closely followed by Chad and Regis both boxing on the card of ACID TEST at Nottingham‘s Harvey Hadden Stadium on Saturday 12 October.

And there will be more action in store for fight fans when some of the country’s top amateur and professional kickboxers converge on Grantham Meres Leisure Centre on Saturday 5 October for the latest Suggy’s Gym show, NEXT GENERATION.

Tickets for both UK shows are on sale now – for details and bookings, call the hotline 07816 840920 – and information on how and when to watch the live streaming from Miami will be available shortly at baileysugden.com and on social media.
